The Short Answer

You need travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover for a Schengen visa, and the European Commission lists emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation cover as mandatory. The rule applies across all 29 Schengen countries for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The UK sits outside Schengen and does not list insurance as a visa document, but hospital treatment there is not free for visitors.

Travel Insurance for Europe Trips: Schengen and Beyond

You need travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover for any Europe trip that involves a Schengen visa, and you should carry cover even where no visa is required. The European Commission lists medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation as a mandatory Schengen visa document, and the same 29 countries apply that rule. Travl's Schengen-compliant travel insurance from AED 30 meets it, and this guide walks you through the rest of the file, plus what changes for the UK and other non-Schengen countries.

Do I need travel insurance for a Schengen visa?

Yes, medical insurance is a mandatory document for every Schengen short-stay visa application. The European Commission's application guide lists it alongside your passport, form and photo, and states it must cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death.

Embassies in the UAE apply that rule through a EUR 30,000 minimum medical limit, which is why Travl's embassy-accepted Schengen insurance from AED 30 is built to exactly that figure. It is issued by AXA and accepted by VFS Global and BLS International, the two centres that receive Schengen files in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The certificate must match your travel dates and cover the whole trip. Buy it after you fix your dates but before your appointment, because the centre checks the policy period against the dates on your form.

Which countries count as Schengen, and which do not?

The Schengen area has 29 countries: 25 EU member states plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, according to the European Commission. The EU members are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Ireland and Cyprus are the two EU members outside the zone in practice. The Commission's page explains that Ireland has an opt-out and that Cyprus has not yet had its internal border controls abolished, so neither accepts a Schengen visa as entry permission.

The UK left the EU and was never in Schengen. A trip to London needs its own visa for most UAE residents, and a policy bought for Schengen paperwork covers you there only if its territory includes the UK, so check the geographic scope before you rely on it.

How long can I stay in Europe, and does insurance need to match?

You can stay 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, per the European Commission's short-stay calculator. The count is cumulative, so a week in Paris and three weeks in Rome both draw from the same 90-day allowance.

Your insurance dates must cover the trip you declare. For a single holiday, a single trip policy between your outbound and return dates is enough.

If you travel to Europe several times a year, a 12-month policy from Travl covers unlimited trips from AED 245. That works out cheaper than three or four separate certificates, and you still get a dated certificate for each visa file. Read our comparison of single trip versus annual travel insurance before you choose.

When should I apply, and how long does a Schengen visa take?

Apply no earlier than 6 months before your trip and at least 15 days before you fly, per the European Commission. The standard decision time is 15 days, and the mission can extend that to 45 days if it needs a closer look or more documents.

Appointment slots at VFS Global and BLS International in the UAE fill up quickly before Eid, summer and the December break. Book the slot first, then buy your insurance and reservations for the dates you have committed to.

All 29 countries apply the same visa rules, so the timeline is the same whether you apply through the French, German or Spanish mission, according to the European Commission. The fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, and the centre collects it in dirhams at its own rate.

What proof of travel and accommodation does the embassy want?

Every Schengen mission asks for evidence of your intention to return home and evidence of where you will sleep, as set out on the European Commission's application page. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before the decision, because a refusal does not get your fare back.

A verified flight reservation from Dummy Ticket 365 carries a valid PNR that the visa officer can check, and it starts from USD 13. Dummy Ticket 365 also issues verified hotel reservations by email that embassies accept as proof of accommodation, so you avoid paying for hotel nights before you know the outcome.

A written itinerary ties the file together. Travl's travel itinerary generator produces an embassy-ready, day-by-day PDF for AED 49, with a free preview before you pay. It is a written schedule and not a flight reservation, so you still need the ticket alongside it.

What if I am a UAE national or travelling beyond Schengen?

UAE passport holders do not need a Schengen visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period, per the EU Delegation to the UAE. That waiver does not apply to Ireland, and it does not remove the need for medical cover, because a hospital in Zurich or Munich bills you directly without a policy.

ETIAS will add a pre-travel step for visa-exempt travellers. The European Commission puts the fee at EUR 20 and describes it as a travel authorisation rather than a visa, and it confirms that no applications are being collected yet, with the start date to be announced.

For the UK, the Standard Visitor visa costs GBP 135 for a stay of up to 6 months and you can apply up to 3 months before you travel, per GOV.UK. Decisions usually arrive within 3 weeks after your visa application centre appointment, per the GOV.UK application page.

The UK does not list travel insurance as a visa document, but National Health Service treatment for visitors is not free. Travl's international travel insurance covers worldwide trips with EUR 80,000 or more of medical cover from AED 70, and it adds trip cancellation, baggage loss and flight delay cover that a bare Schengen certificate leaves out.

If the application itself is where you want help, VisaWadi prepares Schengen visa applications for UAE residents from AED 299, with document review, file preparation and appointment booking. Travl handles the insurance and the itinerary, and VisaWadi handles the visa.

Why do Schengen visa applications from the UAE get refused?

Refusals come from files that fail to prove the basics, and insurance is one of the avoidable causes. The European Commission lists purpose of stay, financial means, accommodation and intention to return as the areas you must evidence, and a gap in any of them invites a refusal.

  • Insurance dates that do not match the trip. A policy that starts a day late or ends before your return flight is rejected at the counter. Fix your dates first, then buy cover.
  • Insurance below the medical minimum or from an unrecognised insurer. Buy a certificate built for Schengen files, such as Travl's AXA-issued Schengen plan, rather than relying on a credit card benefit letter.
  • Unverifiable flight or hotel bookings. A screenshot of a search result is not a reservation. Use a booking with a real PNR, like the ones Dummy Ticket 365 issues.
  • Bank statements that do not support the trip. Sudden large deposits or a balance that cannot cover the hotel and daily spend raise questions about financial means.
  • Applying to the wrong country. Apply to the mission of your main destination, or your first entry if you spend equal time in several countries. Applying to whichever centre has a free slot is a common cause of refusal.
  • Passport validity. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you leave, so renew it before you book an appointment.

The visa fee is not refunded after a refusal, per the European Commission. That makes a EUR 90 mistake on top of any non-refundable bookings, so it pays to get the file right first time.

How much does a Europe trip cost in fees and cover?

Service fees for the paperwork are small next to the visa fee itself. The table separates what you pay Travl and its partners from what the embassy and the visa centre charge.

Which Travl plan you pick depends on the trip. A short Schengen holiday only needs the AED 30 certificate, a UK or multi-region trip benefits from the international plan, and frequent flyers save with the annual multi-trip policy. Our guide to how much travel insurance costs in the UAE breaks down the price drivers.

If you need to claim while abroad, Travl runs a human-assisted AXA claims process by email or WhatsApp. Compare the plans on the travel insurance hub before you book your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the European Commission lists medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation as a required document for every Schengen short-stay visa. Embassies in the UAE apply a EUR 30,000 medical minimum, and the certificate must cover your full travel dates. Travl's AXA-issued Schengen plan starts from AED 30.
Ireland, Cyprus and the United Kingdom are not in the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa does not let you enter them. Ireland has an opt-out and Cyprus has not yet lifted its internal border controls, according to the European Commission. The UK issues its own Standard Visitor visa at GBP 135.
The standard processing time is 15 days from the date the application is lodged, and the embassy can extend that to 45 days if it needs more documents or a closer review. You can apply no earlier than 6 months before your trip and must apply at least 15 days before you travel.
No visa is needed. UAE passport holders are exempt from Schengen visa requirements for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, though the waiver does not extend to Ireland. Insurance is not checked at the border, but without cover a European hospital bills you directly, so medical cover is still worth buying.
Only if the policy's territory includes the UK, so check the geographic scope on the certificate. A policy bought purely for Schengen paperwork may cover the 29 Schengen countries alone. Travl's international travel insurance covers worldwide trips with EUR 80,000 or more of medical cover from AED 70, which is the safer choice for London plus Paris itineraries.
