Travel Medical Insurance Explained: What's Covered and What's Not
Travel medical insurance covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, surgery, and repatriation to your home country if you fall ill or get injured abroad. It does not cover pre-existing medical conditions, routine check-ups, or non-emergency treatment. Schengen visa applicants must have a minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical coverage. Travl issues AXA-backed travel medical insurance accepted by Schengen embassies, VFS Global, and BLS International.

Travel Medical Insurance Explained: What's Covered and What's Not
Travel medical insurance pays for emergency medical treatment if you get sick or injured while travelling abroad. It covers hospitalisation, surgery, ambulance fees, and the cost of flying you home if needed. What it does not cover is routine treatment, elective procedures, or conditions you already had before you left. Understanding this distinction saves you from nasty surprises when you need to make a claim.
What does travel medical insurance actually cover?
A standard travel medical insurance plan covers the following situations:
- Emergency medical treatment: Doctor visits, emergency surgery, hospital stays, and prescribed medication resulting from a sudden illness or accident abroad.
- Hospitalisation: Daily hospital room and board, intensive care, and associated nursing costs.
- Emergency medical evacuation: Transport by air ambulance or medical escort to the nearest appropriate hospital, or back to the UAE, if local facilities cannot treat your condition.
- Repatriation of remains: If the worst happens, the policy covers the cost of returning your remains to your home country.
- COVID-19 coverage: Many plans now include emergency treatment for COVID-19 and related complications while abroad.
- 24/7 emergency assistance: Access to a multilingual helpline that coordinates with hospitals, arranges payments directly, and advises on the nearest suitable facility.
Travl's medical cover abroad is issued by AXA, which means claims are handled by one of the world's largest insurers. That matters when you're in a foreign hospital and need someone to authorise payment quickly.

What is not covered by travel medical insurance?
The exclusions matter as much as the benefits. Here is what a standard travel medical plan will not pay for:
- Pre-existing medical conditions: Any condition you were diagnosed with or treated for before your policy start date is excluded unless the insurer has specifically agreed to cover it.
- Non-emergency treatment: Planned procedures, dental check-ups, eye tests, and routine prescriptions are not covered. Emergency dental pain relief is sometimes included, but cosmetic dentistry is not.
- Adventure and extreme sports injuries: Skiing, scuba diving, rock climbing, bungee jumping, and similar activities require a specialist add-on. Standard medical travel plans exclude injuries from these activities.
- Self-inflicted injuries: Injuries resulting from alcohol or drug impairment, or deliberate self-harm, are excluded.
- Treatment after returning home: Once you are back in the UAE, any follow-up treatment falls under your local health insurance, not your travel policy.
- Pregnancy (beyond a certain stage): Most plans cover emergency complications up to a set number of weeks, but routine antenatal care and planned delivery abroad are excluded.
- Travelling against medical advice: If your doctor advised you not to travel and you went anyway, the insurer can refuse any related claim.
Always read the policy wording before you buy. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, hypertension, or a heart condition, ask the insurer directly whether it is covered and get the answer in writing.
Why is travel medical insurance required for a Schengen visa?
Every Schengen visa application requires proof of travel medical insurance with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. This is a hard requirement, not optional. The policy must cover the entire duration of your stay and be valid across all 27 Schengen member states. Embassies check this at the document review stage, and VFS Global and BLS International check it again when you submit your application.
Travl's Schengen visa insurance meets this EUR 30,000 minimum and is accepted by all major Schengen embassies in the UAE. Plans start from AED 30 and are issued by AXA. You receive your certificate by email, ready to include in your visa file.
For a full breakdown of what the embassies require, read our guide on Schengen visa travel insurance requirements.
How is travel medical insurance different from standard travel insurance?
Travel medical insurance focuses specifically on health-related emergencies. Standard travel insurance is broader and typically includes trip cancellation, baggage loss, flight delays, and sometimes legal assistance, in addition to medical cover.
If you want comprehensive protection for a single trip, Travl's single trip insurance bundles medical coverage with trip cancellation and baggage protection. If you travel frequently, the annual multi-trip insurance covers unlimited trips for 12 months from AED 245, which works out significantly cheaper than buying individual policies for each trip.
For travellers who need the widest possible protection, Travl's international travel insurance provides EUR 80,000 or more in medical coverage plus trip cancellation, baggage loss, and flight delay benefits, from AED 70.
Do UAE residents really need travel medical insurance if they have UAE health insurance?
Yes. UAE health insurance policies issued by Daman, Oman Insurance, or employer group plans cover treatment inside the UAE. They do not cover emergency hospitalisation in Europe, the UK, the US, or most other destinations. The moment you leave the country, your local health card is, in almost all cases, useless.
Medical bills abroad can reach tens of thousands of dirhams for a single hospitalisation. A broken leg in France, a cardiac event in Germany, or a road accident in Italy can result in bills that wipe out savings entirely. Travel medical insurance eliminates that risk for a cost that is typically under AED 100 for a short trip.
What documentation do you get with travel medical insurance?
When you purchase a plan through Travl, you receive an insurance certificate by email. This document includes:
- Your name and policy number
- The coverage period and geographical scope
- The medical coverage limit (e.g. EUR 30,000 for Schengen plans)
- The insurer name (AXA)
- Emergency contact numbers
This certificate is what you submit with your visa application. Keep a digital copy on your phone throughout your trip so you can access your insurer's emergency line without hunting for paperwork.
What about flight reservations for visa applications?
Travel insurance is one part of your visa file. Embassies also require proof of your intended travel dates, which means a confirmed flight itinerary. Buying a real ticket before your visa is approved is a significant financial risk — if your application is rejected, you may lose the full ticket cost. Our article on why buying a real ticket before your visa is approved is a risky move explains exactly why this matters.
The practical alternative is a verified flight reservation from Dummy Ticket 365. These are genuine GDS-issued reservations with valid PNR codes, delivered to your inbox in minutes, and accepted by Schengen embassies as proof of onward travel. Starting from USD 13, it removes the financial risk of committing to a non-refundable ticket before you have your visa in hand. Dummy Ticket 365 also issues verified hotel reservations if you need proof of accommodation for your application.
To understand how embassies verify these reservations, read our explainer on PNR codes and how visa officers verify them.
How to choose the right travel medical insurance plan
Three questions will narrow down your choice:
- What is the destination? Schengen countries require EUR 30,000 minimum. For the US or Canada, medical costs are much higher, so a plan with EUR 80,000 or more in coverage is worth considering.
- How long is the trip? Single trip plans are priced by the day. If you travel more than three or four times per year, an annual multi-trip plan saves money.
- Do you have any pre-existing conditions? If yes, contact Travl or the insurer directly to confirm whether your condition can be declared and covered before you purchase.
