Travel Insurance for UAE Expats: What's Different About Your Cover
Yes, a UAE expat's travel insurance is different: you buy it as a UAE resident, it must cover trips home, and for a Schengen visa it must be a UAE-issued policy with at least EUR 30,000 medical cover valid across all Schengen states. Home-country policies are not intended for people living abroad, and employer health cover is not travel cover. Travl's AXA-issued plans start at AED 30.

As a UAE expat, your travel insurance is different in three ways: it has to be bought as a UAE resident, it has to work in your home country as well as everywhere else, and for a Schengen visa it has to be the UAE-issued policy the consulate in Dubai or Abu Dhabi expects to see. The policy your family uses back home will not do the job, and neither will the medical card your employer gave you. Travl travel insurance is issued by AXA for UAE residents, starts at AED 30 for Schengen cover, and is accepted by VFS Global and BLS International.

What you need
- A valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, because the policy and any visa application are made as a UAE resident
- Your passport, valid for at least 3 months after the visa period if you are applying for a Schengen visa (EEAS)
- Exact travel dates, so the policy start and end dates match your trip
- The list of countries you will enter, including any transit stop
- A note of any pre-existing medical condition to declare before you buy
- A Travl insurance certificate from the travel insurance plans for UAE residents, emailed after payment
- For a visa file: a day-by-day travel itinerary from Travl (AED 49) and a flight reservation with a return leg from Dummy Ticket 365, priced from USD 13

Why can't I use travel insurance from my home country?
A policy sold in your home country assumes you live there, and you do not. The UK government's travel insurance guidance says plainly that travel insurance is not intended for permanent residence abroad, and warns that policies carry an annual limit on how much time in total you can spend outside the UK (GOV.UK). An expat who has lived in Dubai for three years fails that test on day one.
The same logic applies whether your passport is Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or British. Insurers price and underwrite on your country of residence, and a claim from someone who was never eligible to hold the policy is the easiest claim in the world to refuse.
Cover written for UAE residents fixes this. Travl's AXA-issued travel cover is sold on the basis that you live in the UAE, so your residency is the qualifying fact rather than the disqualifying one. We have separate guides for British expats, Indian passport holders, Pakistani passport holders and Filipino residents.
Does my UAE employer health insurance cover me abroad?
Treat your employer's medical card as UAE-only unless the policy wording says otherwise. The UAE Government portal describes the mandatory scheme as a condition of issuing or renewing residency permits, implemented in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and extending to the other emirates, with a basic package priced at AED 320 a year (u.ae). Nothing on that page mentions treatment outside the country.
The basic package is built to satisfy a residency requirement, not to fly you home from a hospital in Munich. Repatriation, emergency medical transport and death abroad are the items a Schengen consulate wants covered (European Commission), and they are the items a domestic health plan is least likely to include.
If your employer gave you a premium international plan, read its geographical scope and its trip-length limit before you rely on it. If either is missing or unclear, a dedicated travel medical insurance policy costs less than one night in a European hospital.
Where does a UAE expat apply for a Schengen visa, and what insurance is accepted?
You apply in the UAE, and your insurance has to be valid across every Schengen state. The European Commission's rule is that you must apply at the consulate with territorial responsibility for the country where you are legally resident, and if you are visiting several countries you apply to the one where you will spend the longest time (European Commission). So a UAE resident files through VFS Global or BLS International in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, not at a consulate back home.
The insurance itself must cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death (European Commission). The EU's published Schengen requirements set the minimum at EUR 30,000, valid for all Schengen states and for the entire period of the intended stay (EEAS).
Travl's Schengen-compliant travel insurance is written to that standard: EUR 30,000 medical cover, issued by AXA, from AED 30, and accepted by VFS Global and BLS International. The certificate names you, your dates and the Schengen area, which is what the visa officer checks.
If you want someone to prepare the application file itself, that is VisaWadi's job rather than Travl's. VisaWadi handles document review, file preparation and appointment booking for UAE residents through its Schengen visa service, from AED 299.
Am I covered when I fly home to visit family?
Your home country counts as abroad on a UAE-resident policy, so a trip to Kerala, Lahore, Manila or Manchester is covered the same way a trip to Paris is, as long as it sits inside the plan's geographical area. Check that area before you buy: the international travel insurance plan gives worldwide cover with EUR 80,000 or more of medical protection, from AED 70.
Read the pre-existing condition wording if you go home for treatment or follow-up. The UK government's guidance is to declare existing conditions or pending treatment or tests, because failing to declare something may invalidate your travel insurance (GOV.UK). The same principle applies to a UAE policy, and our guide to pre-existing conditions and travel insurance explains what to declare.
One more difference for British expats: there is no reciprocal health agreement between the UAE and the UK (GOV.UK). Do not assume that a UK passport buys you free treatment on either side of the journey. Insure the trip.
What happens to my cover if I stay away for months?
Two clocks run against a long absence: your policy end date and your residence visa. The UAE Government portal states that an expatriate resident who lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously has their residence visa nullified automatically, with exceptions for categories such as students studying abroad and residents excluded by an ICP decision (u.ae).
Your travel insurance is tied to your UAE residency, so losing the visa can leave you with a policy you were no longer eligible to hold. Keep every trip inside the 180 days, and if a posting or a family situation stretches longer, speak to Travl before you leave rather than after a claim.
On the policy side, a single trip policy covers one journey between fixed dates and stops on the return date, so set the end date to the day you actually land back in the UAE. Frequent flyers do better on the annual multi-trip plan, a 12-month policy covering unlimited trips from AED 245, though each trip still has its own maximum length in the wording. Our single trip versus annual comparison walks through the maths.
How do I make a claim from outside the UAE?
You contact Travl, and Travl submits the claim to AXA and handles the follow-up. The claims process starts with an email or a WhatsApp message to the team, and it covers medical, trip cancellation, trip delay and baggage claims for UAE residents.
Keep every receipt, discharge summary and police report in the currency it was issued in. Claims are assessed against documents, and an expat claiming from a third country has to prove the treatment, the cost and the dates without a hospital that can be phoned in the same time zone. The claims guide lists exactly what to save.
Why do UAE expats get their Schengen applications refused?
Insurance is the avoidable reason, and it fails in predictable ways. Each of the following is caught by the consulate or the visa centre and can cost you the application and the fee.
- A home-country policy. A certificate that shows you as resident somewhere other than the UAE contradicts the residence visa in your file, and the UK government itself says travel insurance is not intended for permanent residence abroad (GOV.UK).
- Cover below EUR 30,000 or not valid for all Schengen states. The EU's published minimum is EUR 30,000 valid across the whole Schengen area for the entire stay (EEAS); a policy for France alone, or for a lower amount, is not compliant.
- Dates that do not match the trip. The policy must cover the entire period of the intended stay (EEAS), so a policy that starts a day late or ends a day early is a refusal in waiting.
- Applying at the wrong consulate. A UAE resident who applies through a consulate in their home country is outside the rule on territorial responsibility for the country of legal residence (European Commission).
- Missing repatriation cover. The Commission's list requires insurance covering repatriation, including in the event of death (European Commission); an employer medical card rarely includes it.
- A passport with too little validity. The EU requirement is validity of at least 3 months after the visa period (EEAS). Renew first, then apply.
- No return flight in the file. The EU's document list asks for a copy of the flight ticket or flight reservation including the return flight (EEAS). Dummy Ticket 365 issues a verified reservation with a real PNR for this purpose, from USD 13.
What does it cost?
Travl's fees are fixed and paid in dirhams. Embassy and visa-centre fees are set by the consulate and the centre, paid separately at the appointment, and are not something Travl collects or refunds.
