Travel Insurance Regions Explained: Gulf, Europe and Worldwide Cover Compared

The Short Answer

Pick the region that contains every country on your trip, and buy the wider region if the itinerary crosses two. Travl prices AXA-issued plans across five regions: Gulf, Europe, Worldwide excluding USA and Canada, Worldwide, and Asian Subcontinent. A destination outside the chosen region is not covered. Schengen visa files need the Europe region with EUR 30,000 medical cover, from AED 30.

Travel Insurance Regions Explained: Gulf, Europe and Worldwide Cover Compared

Pick the region that contains every country on your trip, and if the itinerary crosses two regions, buy the wider one. Travl prices every AXA-issued plan by one of five regions: Gulf, Europe, Worldwide excluding USA and Canada, Worldwide, and Asian Subcontinent. A destination outside the region on your certificate is simply not covered, so the region you tick on the quote form matters more than the plan name.

What are the five travel insurance regions on the Travl quote form?

The five regions are Gulf, Europe, Worldwide excluding USA and Canada, Worldwide, and Asian Subcontinent. Every Travl travel insurance plan is priced by whichever of these your trip falls into, and the region name is printed on the AXA certificate.

Gulf covers the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Egypt and Bahrain. It is the tier for a weekend in Muscat, an Umrah trip or a family visit to Amman.

Europe covers Europe including the Schengen countries. This is the tier for a Paris holiday, a Swiss ski week or any Schengen visa file, and it is what the Schengen visa insurance page sells from AED 30.

Worldwide excluding USA and Canada covers everywhere except the USA, Canada, and all islands in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Thailand, Japan, Australia, Turkey, South Africa and the UK all sit here.

Worldwide covers everywhere, including the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Asian Subcontinent is a separate tier for Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which is the one to pick for a home visit if you are from one of those four countries.

Which region should I choose for my trip?

Choose the smallest region that still contains every country you will set foot in. The rule on the quote form is blunt: a trip must be insured for the region containing every country visited, and a destination outside the chosen region is not covered.

For a single-country trip, this is easy. Dubai to Riyadh is Gulf, Dubai to Rome is Europe, Dubai to Bangkok is Worldwide excluding USA and Canada, Dubai to New York is Worldwide, and Dubai to Lahore is Asian Subcontinent.

The UK is not a Schengen country, but it is still in Europe for insurance purposes on the Travl form, because the Europe tier covers Europe including the Schengen countries. If you are unsure where a specific destination falls, ask the team on the contact page before you pay rather than guessing.

What if my trip crosses two regions?

Buy the wider region, every time. A certificate for the narrower region leaves the other leg with no cover at all, and a claim from that leg has nothing to be paid against.

Take a common UAE itinerary: a week in Istanbul followed by a week in Athens. Turkey is outside the Europe tier, so this trip needs Worldwide excluding USA and Canada, even though Greece alone would have been Europe. The same logic applies to Mumbai plus Colombo (Asian Subcontinent) versus Mumbai plus Kathmandu (Worldwide excluding USA and Canada).

The UK government's foreign travel insurance guidance makes the same point from the traveller's side: your policy should cover all the places you intend to visit, even if only in transit, in case anyone needs emergency treatment in a transit country. A long layover in a country outside your region is exactly the gap it warns about.

Do transit stops count as a country visited?

Treat any airport where you clear immigration or leave the terminal as a country visited. A same-day connection where you stay airside is a lower risk, but the Foreign Office advice above still recommends covering transit countries, because a medical emergency does not wait for your onward flight.

If your cheapest routing to Europe connects through a non-European hub, the safest reading is to price the wider region and compare the difference. On a single trip plan the gap between tiers is small compared with a hospital bill in the wrong country.

Why do the USA and Canada have their own tier?

Medical treatment in North America costs far more than almost anywhere else, so insurers price it separately. The UK Foreign Office gives a worked example on its travel insurance page: a stomach bug or infection treated in a hospital in the USA, with possible medical evacuation or repatriation, can cost GBP 150,000 or more.

The Government of Canada's own travel insurance page adds that hospitals and clinics in other countries can be very expensive and may require immediate cash payment, and that in some countries they will not treat you if you do not have enough insurance or money to pay. That is why the Caribbean and the Bahamas are grouped with the USA and Canada: patients there are often evacuated to US hospitals.

For a US or Canadian trip, the international travel insurance plan with EUR 80,000+ medical, priced from AED 70, is the natural starting point. Select Worldwide as the region and check the policy document for the medical limit that applies to your plan.

Does the region matter for a Schengen visa application?

Yes, and the wrong region will get the insurance rejected at the visa centre. The European External Action Service's general Schengen visa requirements state that travel medical insurance must cover the entire period of intended stay, be valid for all Schengen States, and carry a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death.

The European Commission's Schengen visa application page lists the same core scope: medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death. Travl's Schengen plan is built to this specification, is accepted by VFS Global and BLS International, and starts from AED 30 on the Europe region.

Pick Europe for any Schengen file, whether you are applying through the France visa insurance, Germany visa insurance or Spain visa insurance page. If you plan to add Turkey or Morocco to the same trip, insure for the wider Worldwide excluding USA and Canada region, which still satisfies the "valid for all Schengen States" test because it includes Europe.

Insurance is one part of a Schengen file. A verified flight reservation from Dummy Ticket 365 and a day-by-day travel itinerary complete the travel section, and if you want someone to prepare and track the application itself, that service is offered by VisaWadi at visawadi.com/uae/visa/schengen, not by Travl.

Should I buy an annual plan instead of picking a region each time?

Buy the annual multi-trip plan from AED 245 if you take three or more trips a year, but still choose the region carefully. An annual policy is also issued for a region, so a Worldwide excluding USA and Canada annual plan will not cover a mid-year trip to Toronto.

Frequent travellers who mix Gulf weekends, a European summer and one North American trip should price the annual plan on the Worldwide region and compare it with buying single trip plans for each journey. The single trip versus annual comparison walks through that maths.

Claims fail on region because the traveller was somewhere the certificate did not cover, and every one of these causes is avoidable at the quote stage.

  • Insuring only the main destination. A Europe certificate bought for Paris does not respond to a hospital visit during four days in Marrakech on the same trip.
  • Forgetting the transit country. The UK Foreign Office specifically warns to cover places visited only in transit. A layover emergency outside your region is uninsured.
  • Choosing Worldwide excluding USA and Canada for a Caribbean cruise or a Bahamas stopover. Those islands are grouped with the USA and Canada and need the full Worldwide region.
  • Assuming Asian Subcontinent covers the whole of Asia. It covers Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka only. Nepal, the Maldives and Thailand need the Worldwide excluding USA and Canada region.
  • Assuming Gulf covers the whole Middle East. Turkey and Morocco are outside the Gulf tier. Check the nine-country list before you rely on it.
  • Dates that do not match the certificate. A region that is right but dates that end a day early leave the last night uncovered, and Schengen rules require cover for the entire period of stay.

If a claim does arise, Travl's claims page explains the human-assisted process: you email or WhatsApp the team, they submit to AXA and handle the follow-up. The first thing checked is whether the incident happened inside the insured region and dates.

What does each region cost?

Travl publishes "from" prices by plan rather than a public rate card by region, so the table below shows the entry price of each plan and the region it is most often bought for. There is no separate embassy or visa-centre fee for the insurance itself, and the itinerary document is a separate optional product.

Exact premiums depend on the traveller's age, trip length and region, and appear on the quote form before you enter any passenger details. Pricing a trip on two different regions takes under a minute and shows you what the wider tier actually costs.

Not sure which region your trip falls in?

Price it in under a minute. Travl travel insurance is issued by AXA, accepted by Schengen embassies, VFS Global and BLS International, and starts from AED 30 for Europe and AED 245 for an annual multi-trip plan. Enter your route on the quote form and the certificate lands in your inbox by email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose Europe. It covers Europe including the Schengen countries, and Travl's Schengen plan on this region carries the EUR 30,000 medical minimum that the EU requires, valid for all Schengen States. It starts from AED 30 and is accepted by VFS Global and BLS International.
You are not covered there. A trip must be insured for the region containing every country visited, so a Europe certificate gives no cover during a side trip to Turkey or Morocco. Price the wider region instead, which for that example is Worldwide excluding USA and Canada.
No. That region excludes the USA, Canada, and all islands in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Any trip touching those places, including a cruise stop, needs the full Worldwide region, because medical care there is priced at North American levels.
No. Asian Subcontinent covers Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka only. Nepal, the Maldives, Thailand and the rest of Asia fall under Worldwide excluding USA and Canada, so pick that region if your trip goes beyond those four countries.
Yes. The UK Foreign Office advises covering all the places you intend to visit, even if only in transit, in case someone needs emergency treatment there. If your connection is in a country outside your chosen region, price the wider region before you buy.
