International Travel Insurance: When You Need Worldwide Coverage

Updated 12 Sept 202610 min read11 sectionsAmmar Afridi
The Short Answer

You need international travel insurance with worldwide cover for any trip outside the Schengen area, and for any long-haul destination such as the USA, Canada, Japan or Australia where hospital bills exceed EUR 30,000. The UK government cites GBP 150,000 or more for a US hospital stay with evacuation. Travl's international plan, issued by AXA, provides EUR 80,000 or more in medical cover from AED 70 for UAE residents.

International Travel Insurance: When You Need Worldwide Coverage

You need international travel insurance with worldwide medical cover whenever your trip leaves the Schengen area, and especially when it touches the USA, Canada, Japan or Australia, where a hospital stay runs into six figures. A Schengen-only policy is built to satisfy a visa rule, not to pay a New York emergency room bill. Travl's international plan starts at AED 70 and carries EUR 80,000 or more in medical cover, plus trip cancellation, baggage and flight-delay benefits.

What you need before you buy worldwide cover

  • A passport that is valid for the whole trip and machine-readable, as the UAE Government advises.
  • Your exact departure and return dates, so the policy covers the full length of the trip.
  • Every country you will set foot in, including transit stops.
  • A list of any planned activities such as skiing, diving or motorbike hire.
  • Details of any pre-existing medical condition, declared honestly at purchase.
  • Your UAE residence visa details, since Travl's plans cover UAE residents travelling abroad.
  • The medical cover minimum your visa demands, if the destination sets one.

Do you need international travel insurance for every trip abroad?

Yes, because no government pays your medical bills abroad and hospitals in many countries will not treat you until you show that someone will. The Government of Canada puts it bluntly: hospitals and clinics in other countries can be very expensive and may require immediate cash payment, and some will not treat you without enough insurance or money.

The bill for a routine mishap is far beyond what a UAE salary absorbs. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office gives three examples: a broken leg in Spain at GBP 25,000 or more, a quad bike accident in Greece at GBP 80,000 or more, and a stomach bug in the USA at GBP 150,000 or more once evacuation is included.

Your UAE health insurance does not follow you onto the plane. Employer plans are written for treatment inside the UAE, so the moment you land in Bangkok, Toronto or Tbilisi you are uninsured unless you bought travel insurance before departure.

What does worldwide coverage actually mean?

Worldwide coverage means the policy pays for emergency treatment in any country on your itinerary rather than only inside one region such as the Schengen area. The territorial limit is the first thing to read on any certificate, because a plan sold as "Europe" stops paying the moment you cross into Turkey, Georgia or the UK.

The FCDO lists what a proper policy has to include: emergency treatment in hospital, emergency transport and ambulances, repatriation, return travel after treatment, and cover for every destination including countries you only transit. A worldwide plan ticks those boxes for the whole trip instead of one leg.

International travel insurance from Travl is issued by AXA with EUR 80,000 or more in medical cover, alongside trip cancellation, baggage loss and flight-delay benefits. That is the plan to pick for any itinerary that is not purely a Schengen visa trip.

When is a EUR 30,000 Schengen policy not enough?

A EUR 30,000 policy is enough for the visa stamp and for a short European holiday, and not enough for a serious hospital admission or anything outside Europe. The European Commission's Schengen visa guidance requires medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death. The figure embassies apply is EUR 30,000, which is exactly what Travl's Schengen visa insurance from AED 30 provides.

Set that floor against the FCDO's own examples and the gap is obvious. GBP 25,000 for a broken leg in Spain already sits close to EUR 30,000, and a quad bike accident in Greece at GBP 80,000 blows straight through it, with the balance landing on you.

The Schengen plan also stops at the Schengen border. If your European trip includes London, Istanbul or a stopover on the way home, or if the trip is not to Europe at all, you have outgrown it and need worldwide cover from AED 70.

Which destinations need EUR 80,000 or more in medical cover?

The USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and Singapore are the destinations where medical cover below EUR 80,000 leaves you exposed, because private hospital pricing there is the highest in the world. The FCDO example of GBP 150,000 or more for a US hospital stay with evacuation is the number to keep in mind when you compare limits.

Long-haul trips also carry a bigger repatriation risk. Flying a stretcher case from Los Angeles or Sydney back to Dubai with a medical escort costs far more than a short air ambulance within Europe, which is why medical evacuation and repatriation cover matters more the further you go.

The Government of Canada tells its own citizens to make sure a policy covers medical evacuation to the nearest place with proper care and, in the worst case, the preparation and return of remains. Apply the same test to any plan you buy for a long-haul trip from the UAE.

Single trip, international or annual multi-trip: which plan fits?

Buy a single trip policy for one holiday to one region, an international plan for any long-haul or multi-country trip, and an annual multi-trip plan if you fly out three or more times a year. Travl sells all three, issued by AXA, and the comparison on the travel insurance hub shows the limits side by side.

A single trip policy covers one journey between fixed dates and is the cheapest option for a Schengen visa file. The international plan raises the medical limit to EUR 80,000 or more and adds trip cancellation, baggage and flight-delay cover from AED 70.

The annual multi-trip plan costs from AED 245 for 12 months of unlimited trips. If you travel for work, visit family in India or Pakistan twice a year and take a summer holiday, it pays for itself by the second trip. Our guide to single trip versus annual insurance runs the numbers in detail.

What should UAE residents check before buying worldwide cover?

Check five things before you pay: the territorial limit, the medical limit, the trip dates, the activity list and the pre-existing condition wording. The FCDO advises buying insurance before travel, reading the exclusions carefully and carrying your policy details, including the emergency assistance telephone number, with you.

Pre-existing conditions need the most care. The Government of Canada tells travellers to get a written agreement that the insurance covers the condition and to watch for a stability clause, which requires no change in the condition, and no new symptoms or medications, during a set period before the trip. Read our post on pre-existing conditions and travel insurance before you declare.

Check the destination itself as well. The UAE Government advises citizens and residents to contact the destination country's mission in the UAE about visa regulations and to review the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisories before leaving, and some visas set their own insurance minimum that the policy has to meet.

Why do international travel insurance claims get refused?

Claims get refused for avoidable reasons far more often than for genuine exclusions, and every one of them can be fixed before departure. These are the causes that come up again and again.

  • The policy did not cover the country. A Schengen-only certificate used for a trip that included the UK or a US stopover pays nothing for treatment there. The FCDO is explicit that cover has to include every destination and transit country.
  • The dates were short. Buying cover for the outbound dates only, then extending the trip, leaves the extra days uninsured. The policy has to run for the full length of the trip.
  • An undeclared pre-existing condition. Insurers check medical history at claim time, and a condition left off the form voids the medical claim. The Government of Canada tells travellers to get the condition confirmed in writing.
  • An activity that was not covered. Skiing, diving and motorbike hire sit outside standard cover on many plans. Our adventure sports insurance guide explains what to add.
  • Travelling against official advice. The FCDO warns British travellers that going against its travel advice may invalidate their insurance. Read MOFA's advisories before booking a trip from the UAE.
  • Nobody called the assistance line. Insurers expect a call before non-emergency treatment, and a hospital bill paid privately without contacting them is harder to recover. Travl's claims page explains how to start an AXA claim by email or WhatsApp.

The full list of standard exclusions is in our post on travel insurance exclusions, and our guide to filing a travel insurance claim walks through the paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A Schengen visa policy is limited to the Schengen area and stops paying at its border, so it is worthless in the USA or Canada. For those destinations you need worldwide cover such as Travl's international plan, which carries EUR 80,000 or more in medical cover from AED 70.
EUR 80,000 or more for long-haul destinations. The UK Foreign Office cites GBP 150,000 or more for a US hospital stay with evacuation and GBP 25,000 or more for a broken leg in Spain, so a EUR 30,000 Schengen minimum leaves a large gap outside Europe.
No. UAE employer health plans are written for treatment inside the UAE, and foreign hospitals can demand immediate cash payment or refuse treatment without proof of cover. Travel insurance bought before departure, such as Travl's AXA-issued plans, is what pays a hospital abroad.
Yes, if you make three or more trips a year. Travl's annual multi-trip plan costs from AED 245 for 12 months of unlimited trips, so a family visit home, a work trip and a summer holiday are all covered under one AXA policy without buying cover each time.
EUR 80,000 or more in emergency medical cover worldwide, plus trip cancellation, baggage loss and flight-delay benefits, from AED 70. The policy is issued by AXA, covers UAE residents travelling abroad, and the certificate is emailed after payment so it can be used in a visa file.
