Eid Holiday Travel: Last-Minute Visa and Insurance Tips

You can still sort insurance, a flight reservation and an itinerary for an Eid trip in a single afternoon, but a Schengen visa cannot be rushed: the European Commission says applications must be lodged at least 15 days before your journey, and the standard decision takes 15 days. Can I still get a Schengen visa in time for Eid?

Only if there are more than 15 days between today and your departure, and a free appointment slot at the consulate or visa centre. The European Commission states that a Schengen application must be lodged no earlier than 6 months and at least 15 days before the intended journey, at the consulate of the country you plan to visit.

The normal processing time is 15 days, and it can stretch to 45 days when a file needs a closer look. Count backwards from your outbound flight: if the maths does not work, do not gamble EUR 90 on an application that cannot be decided in time.

Because UAE public holidays for Eid are set by moon sighting, your exact days off are confirmed late, but the Hijri dates are published in advance. Plan around the lunar dates and treat the extra day as a bonus rather than the core of the trip.

Do I need travel insurance for a short Eid trip?

Yes, and for a Schengen application it is a hard requirement: the file must include travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation. What if I am going to the UK or a visa-free country instead?

One more limit to keep in mind if you already hold a multiple-entry Schengen visa: the Commission caps stays at 90 days in any 180-day period. A short Eid break will not trouble that limit, but check your earlier trips if you have been in Europe a lot this year.
